The cinematographic
aspects of Steven Spielberg have the most aesthetic appeal to the audience.
He has always opted for unique techniques to provide maximum pleasure to the
viewers. His movies bear the ultimate notion of entertainment with the
inclusion of extremely technical aspects and marvelous cinematographic aspects.
He adheres to the not-so-conventional methods of film making, shifting the idea
to another level of technological perspective and the production design
elements encompasses the most advanced technological perspective of modern
times. He invests his entire concentration to infuse cinematic force within his
movies and this has been initiated through the perfect inclusion of
cinematographic sense. He infuses the most interesting elements of
cinematography and the excellent perspective of the maneuvering of the camera
to bring out the most effective sense of the theme of the movies. In this
paper, Steven Spielberg’s four movies will be discussed to exhibit the numerous
aspects of cinematography and various perspectives of film making process by
Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg can be considered as the master of
filmmaking while involving the sense of extraordinary cinematography and
advanced movie production techniques.
One of the most
important movies of Steven Spielberg is Jaws,
which is the adaption of the book written by Peter Benchley. Benchley adopted
the idea for the story from a real incident that took place in the areas of
Montauk, Long Island when a 17-foot shark was caught by a fisherman. The story
revolves around the incident about a giant white shark that scares the people
of a resort, called Amity in the regions of Long Island. The story involves the
most fearful aspect as few people are attacked and killed by the shark and as a
result, the surrounded town is becoming more inactive due to the ferocious
activities of the shark, which is terrifying away all the tourists and which
affects the overall business of the area. The entire region becomes terrified
by the most heart-rendering activities of the blood-thirsty shark. Eventually,
after a series of mishaps and unprecedented incidents, few people initiate to
take action and catch the dreadful shark to end this period of terror. The film
encompasses several magnificent cinematographic aspects, like the close capture
of the performer’s facial expression through marvelous camera action, which
initiates the storytelling perspective within the film. The expressions engulf
the audience into the deepest sense of anticipation and introspection and
nurture the thought process of the viewers. This technique most evident in the
movie Jaws and the extraordinary mastery of the set setting technique in a
vineyard and the to create a whole water body set up as the movie revolves
around the fearful water creature has enhanced the true sense of the movie.
Bill Butler, the cinematographer paves the way for extraordinary photographic
perspective within the film which successfully infuses a various sense of fear
within the audience. From recreating a beach backdrop in a vineyard to the
marvelous execution of cinematographic aspects to infuse terror, fear, and a
sense of mystery within the audience is evident.
Talking about the
cinematography within science fiction can be observed as a different sense of
perspective altogether. It’s entirely a different shift from the conventional
approach towards normal scenes of some exotic location and depiction of a
thematic aspect of the film. However, E.T
Extra-Terrestrial, this movie doesn’t adhere to the conventional techniques
of the film production, it infuses the mastery sense of shadows and light to
bring out the most thrilling sense of mystery which perfectly fits with the
appearance of most friendly Aliens. Allan Daviau collaborated with Steven
Spielberg in this movie and with the effort of both of them, they created the
most marvelous movie of that period. Steven Spielberg has the exact sense of
approach and what to utilize regarding each and every scene of the movie. To
enhance the sense of mystery Spielberg played with the shadows and light and
added perfect tone to the scenes. Taking various angular shots, the scattered
appearance of shadows and light, and the perfect sense of timing and sound has
created magic on screen for this movie. these elements have helped to pull the
sense of emotion for some alien creature and the little boys effectively. The
ethereal glow on E.T enlightens the mood of the young viewers as they observed
the entire movie with the utmost attention. So, the perfect sense of
cinematography and most intriguing sense of direction has successfully created
the aura of magic within the movie. (Richards 2016).
The extraordinary
maneuvering of the camera and the inclusion of advanced technology can be
observed in the movie Jurassic Park.
This movie has created history in the terms of inclusion of various
technical aspects and advanced filmmaking processes. The universal studio has
infused ample marvelous techniques to generate the sense of fear through the
visual appeal of those archaic creatures.
The movie includes various cameras and the Primo Primes Spherical
Lenses, Panavision Slant Focus Lenses and the cinematographer is Dean Cundey
who casts his magic with Steven Spielberg to bring out the sense of extreme
fear within each scene. The wonderful effects add more spice to the true sense
of this movie. Steven Spielberg successfully works with various angel sense of
the camera and exhibits the sense of fear naturally associated with those
gigantic archaic creatures who try to disrupt the peace of humankind. The movie
includes ample extraordinary techniques and technologies effectively. Spielberg
involves perfectly designed camera movements and infuses an immense sense of
kinetic force to provide justice to the theme of the movie. (Venkatasawmy 2012).
In this sense, another
movie by Steven Spielberg deserves a good round of applause, A. I Artificial Intelligence. The
perspective of modern filmmaking and the utilization of special effects are
quite evident in this movie. Spielberg utilizes the VFX-intensive
cinematography to bring out a completely different perspective within this movie. The
characters are extremely engaging in this movie where special effects added
extraordinary perspective to infuse emotion within an artificially designed
robot child, who dares to become a human-like child. The entire movie involves
emotional aspects of the mother-son relation and to bring out that little sense
of fulfillment within the movie Spielberg involves Janusz Kamiński, the Polish
cinematographer. They together involve various technical aspects and a perfect
sense of technologies in this movie. The most interesting aspect of this movie
is the sense of the future which the director intends to include within each
scene of the movie. The extraordinary capture of the facial expression of the
human-like child who desperately longs for his mother’s affection is evident
within this movie. The artificially programmed child can have a true sense of
emotion for his mother, this very theme requires the exact sense of
cinematography to initiate the sense of fullness within the film. This movie encompasses various
technologically advanced aspects and special effects like the most aspect of
complex puppetry and various computer graphics. Spielberg had the plan of
making a new movie which would include technologically advance element just
after the completion of Jurassic Park. (William 2005).
Steven Spielberg, though
criticized several times by the contemporary film critics for the lack of
acting skill within the characters of his films, however, it is evident that he
is one of the best directors of this age.
Steven Spielberg can be considered as the patron of new film
technologies. The most intriguing aspect is the visual aspect of the movie,
where Spielberg is the master of all trades while dealing with movies. The
excellent cinematographic aspect of the movies and the extraordinary
presentation of each scene often wins the heart of the audience. From Jaws to A. I Artificial Intelligence the various traces of technologies
that have been utilized to enhance the cinematographic sense of the movies can
be observed clearly. The sole aim of discussion to exhibit the major highlights
of Spielberg’s are, he tries to explore and analyze his uses of images with a
steady maturation of film making skills, and interestingly unification of what
had formerly been observed as his divided composition of children’s films and
adult films. The eventual development in the aspects of Cinematographic
elements of the movies can be traced in the discussion effectively. Steven
Spielberg intends to incorporate various aspects of film cinematography to
provide something new to his audience.
